## 5. Academic Monograph
Centella asiatica extract is a traditional medicinal plant containing major bioactive compounds including asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid, and madecassic acid.
It exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, regenerative, neuroprotective, and cytoprotective activities, and modulates signaling pathways involved in oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, extracellular matrix remodeling, and cellular survival (NF-κB, PI3K/Akt/mTOR, MAPK, Nrf2/HO-1, TGF-β/Smad).
During wound healing, it stimulates collagen I, Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF), and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) production to enhance angiogenesis and promote wound contraction, granulation tissue formation, and re-epithelialization.
It exerts anti-inflammatory effects by reducing Interleukin-1β (IL-1β), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Tumor Necrosis Factor α (TNF-α), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and lipoxygenase (LOX) activity.
It demonstrates positive effects on skin aging and wound healing through attenuation of cellular senescence, improvement of mitochondrial function, enhanced collagen synthesis, and regulation of cytokine production.
Oral supplementation reduces wrinkle depth by 11.1%, maximum wrinkle depth by 13.3%, surface roughness by 10.4%, and decreases transepidermal water loss to improve skin barrier function.
It protects human gingival fibroblast viability and migration, maintains antimicrobial activity, modulates macrophage immune responses, and enhances vascular density and branching complexity.
In diabetic wound models, it decreases inflammatory cell infiltration and increases fibroblast density, angiogenesis, and epithelialization, while reducing TNF-α and increasing FGF-2, EGF, VEGF, and IGF-1 expression.
